Wallin, principal of Madison High School, Monday, by Willie Rice, treasurer of American Legion Post 317, donors of the check. Ramsey, Legislative Officer of local Post; Rice, presenting check; and William "Bill" Roberts, a member of Post 317. This was the second $1000 check the local Post has donated, the first years ago when L.B. Ramsey was Commander. Ramsey Ends Long Career As Educator Warren T. Ramsey, Venable Elementary School teacher and coach, has retired after 42 years as an educator. He has taught in Madison and McDowell counties in addition to Buncombe. Ramsey recalled that his first job was in a school operated by the county before the state took over operation of the schools. Then, the school year ran for six months. During his career, Ramsey has been a principal, high school baseball and basketball coach, physical education teacher and elementary coach. He said that teaching "has been a joy to me. Seeing a child develop both physically and mentally is what teaching is all about. If young teachers do not haver love for children, they have chosen the wrong profession. A former star athlete at Marshall High School in the 30's, he U the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Let Ramsey, of the Walnut Creek area. He and his wife reside in West Asheville. "I plan to do some extensive travelling and enjoying an easy retired life," Mr. Ramsey stated. Gowan Retires As Forest Technician Pete Gowan, Supervisory Forestry Technician, French Broad Ranger District, retired on June 28, 1974, after 29 years of Federal service. Pete began his Federal career during World War II when he served in the U.S. Army. He started to work for the Forest Service in Hot Springs in 1946 as a Forest Worker, and has held in creasingly responsible positions since that time. At the time of his retirement he was responsible for fire control, road and trail maintenance, equipment, and recreation on the French Broad Ranger District. ' , f . 4 i i Marshall Swimming Pool Improved; Will Open The long awaited Marshall Municipal swimming pool should be open by Thursday or Friday July 4th or 5th. Some work will still be going on for some time to come but the pool is safe and clean. Every precaution has been Four Injured In Head-On Wreck Sunday Four persons were hospitalized with serious injuries Sunday following a head-on collision about 8:20 a.m. north of Weaverville on U. S. 19, according to the State Highway Patrol. Mrs. Edna Metcalf Teague, 46, of Rt. 2 Marshall was reported in the intensive care unit of Memorial Mission Hospital with her two sons Terry, 9, and Richard, 11, following a collision with Stephen John Jarrett, 38, of Rt. 1, Barnardsville, who was reported in fair condition. A spokesman for the high way patrol said the accident wqs caused when the Jarrett vehicle traveling north crossed the center line into the path of the other car. Heavy fog was also reported in the area at the time of the ac cident. No charges have been filed pending the condition of the Teagues according to the police. Investigation by Patrolman A. E. Collins is continuing. No running around the pool Zeno Ponder Reelected Democrat Chairman Zeno Ponder was reelected chairman of the Madison County Democratic Executive Committee at the county convention held here Satur day. Dr. Bobby Jean Rice Peek was elected first vice chairman; Mrs. Nell Franklin, second vice chairman; J. G. Gardner, third vice chairman; Mrs. J. D. Buckner, secretary; and J. C. Wallin, Jr., treasurer. Mrs. George Shupe, President County Democrat Women; Mrs. Charles Tolley, President of Young Democrats Club. The delegates to the 11th Congressional District Con vention to be held July 20th were elected. Also elected were delegates U the State L . - Only 1 person on the diving board at a.iy time. Towels may be rented at the concession where soft drinks and sandwiches will be available. The hours will be Monday through , Satv)rd.y -9 a.m to 3:30 p.m. and the night session will be from 6 p.m. till 9:30 p.m. when weather gets warm enough.
